Asks Captain Churchill to forward by express a package of shirts, remarking that he is very much in need of them. Writes, "We are occupying this delightful place, been here for ten days- captured some 50 prisoners- 5000 Texas beef cattle marked C.S.A. an ordnance train for Kirby Smith 1800 head sheep for C.S.A. & cotton & sugar for C.S.A..." (possibly referring to Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith). Contains two autograph notes on verso. The first is written in pencil by an ordnance sergeant who was detailed with Churchill. Writes, "We make it a point to serve the boys below…

Ransom, commander of the 2nd Brigade, 6th Division, 17th Corps, writes from "50 Rods from Enemies Works" to McPherson, commander of the 17th Corps during the Battle of Vicksburg. Writes "am holding position but suffering awfully... terrible loss- stop that gun for God sake... I cannot get the move forward until that damn gun on the left is silenced- My loss is heavy- I have done all man can do to get over the works..." Mentions that Colonels Nevins and Humphreys were killed. Written in pencil. Location inferred from content.

Title: to James B. McPherson

To Gen. James B. McPherson, reporting on disloyalty of W.W. Shaw, who plans to ship cotton, and attacks Col. B. G. Farrar of the 30th Missouri: "...his men and officers can not be trusted in the country alone. They pillage and plunder and destroy beyond any men I have ever commanded and will not follow or obey my orders in this respect.... the officers...seem to have a very poor appreciation of the rights of citizens- non combatants-and very little respect for private property." Ransom died in October 1864 from wounds suffered at the Battle of Sabine Station the previous April.
