At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thin blue border on recto. Graphite inscription on recto "Lt. Perry Porter 8th Vt." Graphite inscription on verso "2642." Modern ink inscription on verso "1st Lt. Perry Porter 8th Vt. Vols." Photographers imprint on verso: "Guy B. Davis, Successor to Photographic Artist C. Miller, Burlington Vermont." Cancelled blue two-cent tax stamp on verso.

Title: to Elijah Leonard

Describes the bad weather and encounters with Indians on his march from Massachusetts to Albany, New York. Sends news of recent victories against the French and their Indian allies and says a man brought good news of the fighting in Canada. Asks to be remembered to his family and friends and says "a solider Life is hard[,] hard Lodging and harty victuals."
