Writes, "I sincerely hope that you will do me the honor to read it in as much as the treatment and fate of Secession in Switzerland would have served as a complete lesson to our authorities had they been willing to profit by the experience of others." Also a sentence on page 6 is crossed out, but still legible. Gives an account of the build-up to the Battle of Nashville, as well as the battle itself. Originally wrappers and stab stich binding. Speaks positively about Union Major General George H. Thomas.

Encloses photographs (not included) of the dePeyster and Watts family vaults at Trinity Church in New York City. Mentions a letter from his son regarding the battle of Williamsburg in 1862.
