Informs that 21 of Godfrey's loyal men came in almost naked and asks if he can supply them with clothing. Has heard that some Confederates are about 45 miles away and states that the refugees feel they can be captured. With pencil endorsement on verso telling Paxton to two Captains about the prisoners. Telegram from Paxton, Colonel of the 2nd [West] Virginia Cavalry to Captain and Assistant Adjutant General Botsford of the 23rd Ohio Infantry. Reports on scouting. States Major McMahn and command have returned safely. They only found a few Confederates in the area of Boone, Logan, and Wyoming counties, West Virginia. They captured a lieutenant, three privates, and five horses. States, "All quiet out there - Great destitution." Mentions that Confederate General John B. Floyd is believed to be at Tazewell. States that he divided his men and they went searching for them house to house but the men escaped to the woods. Says they returned to camp because the men and horses were tired. He has seven prisoners. Informs that on Monday the men will gather at Logan Court House to elect a Colonel. Writes, "...Union men selling salt to go to Dixie for 350 per bushel.
