At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title: Chicago Demonstrations

One page clipping from an issue of the New Masses. Contains an article entitled, "Chicago Demonstration" by George Robbins. Highlights the events of the housing protests on the South Side of Chicago that took place on August 1931. Above the title are sketches of Abe Grey and John O'Neil, two Black men, who were murdered by the police during the protest. Illustration by Mitchel Siporin. Reverse side contains a review of titles related to Mexico by Alberto Morales which contain a critique of Stuart Chase's travel book. Morales responds to Chases's complaint of protests in the country.

One fragmented copy of New Masses dated 1931. Contains articles and illustrations related to the Scottsboro boys trial, worker's rights, the death of 42 construction workers building the Empire State Building, lynching, treatment of Asian working class people internationally, the Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party), and communism.
