At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Prints speeches of Maryland lawyers and judges eulogizing Taney. Includes speeches of William Price, District Attorney, Judge Giles, Mr. Wallis, William Schley, Judge Merrick, Andrew Sterett Ridgely, and Reverdy Johnson, an abolitionist who discusses Taney's decision on the Dred Scott case in 1857 and relates some anecdotes.
