At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Greeting Card

Title: to Dexter Kelpe

One greeting card sent to Mr. and Mrs. Dexter Kelpe by the Meltons dated December 21, 1934. Features a man and a woman in holiday clothing holding envelopes the card reads, Greetings." When opened the text changes to read, "Greetings and Greetings to you may be sent but you won't receive another that's more sincerely meant! Merry Christmas!"
