At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Robert A. Mead and Mrs. Robert A. Mead to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 3, 1973. The Meads support the impeachment of President Nixon and write, "We must reserve and protect our system of government. Richard Nixon has proved he is not capable of the high office of the presidency."
