General McPherson requests that Admiral Porter "let the bearer Lorain Ruggles, one of our scouts have (500) Five Hundred Cartridges for 'Henry's Rifle,' Our Ordnance Officer has none that will suit." Written on Headquarters, Seventeenth Army Corps, Department of the Tennessee stationery.

Title: A Treatise on field fortification

A copy of Dennis H. Mahan's "A Treatise on Field Fortification" signed by James B. McPherson. The full title of the book is"A treatise on field fortification : containing instructions on the methods of laying out, constructing, defending, and attacking intrenchments, with the general outlines also of the arrangement, the attack and defence of permanent fortifications." McPherson signs just before the title page, and also writes the date. The book contains twelve fold-out lithographic plates. It was printed in 1852 in New York by John Wiley. Original binders stored separately.

McPherson, Commander of the 17th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee, declares: "With tireless energy, with sleepless vigilance, by night and by day, with battery and with rifle pit, with trench and mine, you made your sure approaches, until overcome by fatigue, and driven to despair in the attempt to oppose your irresistible progress, the whole garrison of over thirty thousand men with all their arms and munitions of war, have, on this, the anniversary of our NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE surrendered to the invincible troops of the ARMY of the TENNESSEE."

Discusses an exaggerated news report regarding the battle of Antietam. Writes "The substance of the news is that 'Genl McClellan has driven the Rebels out of Maryland with great slaughter and has bagged Genl Lee.' The bagging part I think is prospective and the other like all telegraphic news from the Associated Press must be taken with some grains of allowance. The dispatch says 'Bully for Mc'...I think on the whole it is good." Seems skeptical of the good news, and rightly so. He writes "Have you heard anything more definite in relation to the movement of Troops to the Vicinity of 'Tunica Bend' and the concentration of Cavalry in the lower part of the State? The information I have here, is that the Rebel forces occupy about the same relative position between the Big Black and Pearl Rivers, that they have done for the last six weeks."
