Writes that he (McClellan) already corrected a New York publication of the report, and would contact the Adjutant General to correct the report. Claims that in his original report, he offered Hunt the highest praise for his service at Antietam, and noted that Hunt replaced William Barry as Chief of Artillery. Asks if he should write to Admiral David Dixon Porter or Ulysses S. Grant to secure the appointment. Declares "Independently of my warm personal feeling of friendship for Hunt, I feel that the great service he rendered while under my command fully entitles him to far more than he asks, or ever can ask, from the Govt, & make it a simple matter of duty on my part to do whatever may be in my power to aid him."

Thanks Hunt for the manuscript of an article he previously enclosed. Praises Hunt's account, and his skill while serving as Chief of Artillery. Says, "When I remember what positions you held under me & what the relative work done was, I am amazed beyond expression by the magnificent disdain of one to whom I gave a [illegible] in my last battle, while you commanded the artillery the whole Army!!" Indicates that he will forward the manuscript to Newton (possibly John Newton, who had also served as a General during the Civil War).

Wishes Hunt would write about the Peninsula Campaign. Writes that his own manuscript, or memoirs, was destroyed in a fire, but that he plans to rewrite it. Mentions that it must be a relief to be away from all the politicians in Washington, as Sherman had moved to St. Louis. "I can imagine what a relief it must be to you to get rid of the politicians & the very disagreeable atmosphere of that abominable city." Letter written from the Hotel Byron, Villeneuve, Switzerland. Orders to his company of engineers on board the "Clinton" stating that there is no smoking between decks, only officers are allowed in certain areas, roll calls will be at Reveille, Retreat, and Tattoo, inspections will be nightly, gives schedule for the day, and explains proper dress and schedule. Written on board the "Clinton" at sea, during the Mexican War. Remnants of what appear to me a nautical log are pasted on verso. A note explaining the document pasted on front.

Orders his men to "lead the march to the enemy capital," of Mexico City, during the Mexican War. Warns his men not to straggle as "The impotent & cowardly enemy propose to wage the war of the assassin - war to the knife." Promises that soon they will recieve new clothing, rest and payment. It is clear that the weather has made many of McClellan's men sick and weak. Also signed by McClellan for Major General Worth.
