At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Manahan's reply to Johnson's telegram that he oppose the literacy test of the Burnett immigration bill. Agrees that the test unfairly discriminates against immigrants. "You know as well as I do that if the rabid restrictionists of our country had had their way in the days gone by we would not have been here today."
