Received his recent letter. Mentions that Mr. Stedman, the bearer of this letter, has recently arrived from Detroit. Stedman can provide Knox with an account of the happenings there. Relates news that a Cayuga Indian carried off books and papers and took them to Quebec. Would be happy to provide intelligence on the Indians to Knox when he needs it. Describes fighting with the British and the Indians in Detroit. Considers treaty possibilities, as well as how the fur trade will be affected. Writes to confirm he has asked Mr. Stedman the questions Knox mentioned, adding that he wrote on the subject because Mr. Stedman would be delayed in his return to Philadelphia. Explains that Mr. Stedman has information about a conflict between Indians and a Captain Elliott, formerly of Fort Pitt. Adds that Mr. Stedman is a good man, and that Knox should trust his information, though he left Detroit before the end of the action, so his story may not be complete. Writes a letter of recommendation for a young gentleman, a W. Meyrick British officer of the 24th Regiment. Takes "the Liberty to request [Knox's] Civility towards him, and presume upon [Knox's] goodness to pardon [his] boldness, which however [he does] not sit uneasy under knowledge [of] the hospitable dispostion of Mrs. Knox and [Knox]." Sends his regards to "your Lucy" and informs Knox that he is going to remarry. Invites the Knox family to visit. Stain on address leaf where the letter was sealed. Watermarked " J Whatman" and with a hunting horn inside a crest.

Also acknowledges the benefits of Mr. Russell's involvement with the purchase. Hopes Tudor will continue assisting them with their purchase by negotiating with the Committee. Provides extensive suggestions about how best to negotiate with the Committee. Also asks for a map of the lands in question.

Writes that Mr. [William] Tudor has contacted him regarding lands in Maine to be purchased by Mr. [Richard] Soderstrom. Mr. Tudor has sent Mr. Soderstrom to Boston to "conclude the purchase with your Land Committee." Has asked Mr. Tudor to push for an increase in price for the land in question. Asks for Russell's continued support in the endeavor.

Countersigned by Isaac Stoughtenburgh at a June 1787 public auction at the Merchants Coffee House in New York City and Daniel McKinnen. Verifies the sale of ten townships of land on the southeast side of the St. Lawrence River. Macomb attests that these townships were "sold to divers persons for and in behalf of the following Proprietors..." Lists the proprietors as Philip Schuyler, Henry Knox, Alexander Hamilton, John Taylor, John DeLancey, and Thomas Marston. Attests that he holds the lands in trust for them.
