A single page beginning "Why Kansas is neither the whole, nor a tithe of the real question." Written before the debates with Stephen A. Douglas, apparently in response to that Senator's Dec. 9, 1857 speech in opposition to Buchanan's State of the Union address (as suggested by Don Fehrenbacher, "House Divided," 89 ff.). Nicolay and Hay date the metaphor from Oct. 1858 while Basler assigns it to May 1858. Unpublished and unrecorded. Current dating is based upon Don E. Certifies that the Ottawa Indians of Blanchard's Fork and Roche De Boeuf in Franklin County, Kansas, will dissolve as a tribe within five years from the ratification of this treaty and will become citizens of the United States. Lists the articles of agreement. The treaty was concluded 24 June 1862 between William P. Dole, Commissioner for the United States, and the Councilmen of the Ottawa Indians, Pem-ach-wung, Chief; John T. Jones, William Hurr, and James Wind, Councilmen. Ratified 16 July 1862 and amended 19 July 1862.

The printed text of a treaty between the United States and Britain to aid in suppression of the international slave trade. Also contains correspondence between William H. Seward and Richard Lyons, the British diplomat on the subject. Lyons and Seward are the two signers of the treaty. Countersigned by Secretary of State William H. Seward. Convicted of engaging in the slave trade, respite granted to allow Gordon to prepare for execution. He was the only slave trader in U.S. history to be executed for that crime and was executed on 21 February 1862 in New York. See story in Harpers Weekly, 8 March 1862, p.150 (ill. p.157).
