One letter from Abraham Lincoln to Ulysses S. Grant dated September 12, 1864. Makes a suggestion for Philip Sheridan's Shenandoah campaign. Notes that "Sheridan and Early are facing each other at a dead lock." Asks if they could mobilize "ten thousand men, and quietly, but suddenly concentrate them at Sheridan's camp and enable him to make a strike?" Written on "Executive Mansion" stationery.

Lincoln heard that Crittenden was going to write letters in support of Stephen Douglas for the Senate and Thomas L. Harris for the House of Representatives. Lincoln thinks this action would not be in Crittenden's character and asks him to pursue a "hands off" position for the election. Partially printed order directing Secretary of State William H. Seward to affix the seal to a proclamation recommending the celebration of Washington's birthday. On February 19, 1862 Lincoln issued an official proclamation recommending that the people of the United States assemble in their "customary places of meeting for public solemnities" on February 22 in honor of Washington's birthday. One black and white full length seated engraving and one bust engraving of Lincoln included. One black and white full length seated engraving of George Washington also included.

Title: to George G. Meade re: stay of execution for two Union privates

Also requesting the facts of the cases. Signed twice (the second time on a postscript). Lincoln stays the execution for two privates, one whose name Lincoln can't remember in the 1st Regiment NJ Vols., and one of Private Daniel Sullivan in the 13th Mass. Sullivan had been sentenced to be shot for desertion. The other man has not been definitively identified but may be Daniel Drights (or Driggets) (1st NJ, convicted of desertion 17 Sept. 1863).

Signed by Jane Bingley and Thomas J. Nance as co-administrators, and John T. Stuart and Lincoln as legal counsel. Bingley and Nance give bond for 2000 dollars as administrators of John M. Bingley's estate, who died in Morgan County on December 4, 1836. Attested by Aaron Will. Executed one month after Lincoln was admitted to the Illinois bar and two weeks before he became Stuart's partner.
