Howard was head of the Freedmen's Bureau. Lee reponds to Howard's letter (not present) of 26 July 1865 in which Howard declined to take an interest in his pardon application. He describes his motives in fighting for the Confederacy and refers to the South's failure.

Signed by Lee as mustering officer. Signed by Robert Duke Bradley as Captain, Florida Volunteers. States that White, who enrolled in Bradley's company of volunteers 21 February 1857, is discharged from service after serving his six month term. Describes White, who was born in Georgia, as having "Dark complexion, Black eyes, Black hair," and states that he was a farmer at the time of his enlistment. Partially printed on United States Volunteer Service stationery. Written at Fort Dade

Lee, Assistant Adjutant General at Charleston, writes to Colonel Manigault, Chief of Ordnance, South Carolina. The Brigadier General commanding (possibly P.G.T. Beauregard, commander of the forces of Charleston Harbor), orders Manigault to send ordnance and stores listed to Captain Robert Martin, commanding at Georgetown.

Title: to Frank H. Furness

Lee is unable to attend an event in honor of "G. W. Hodge, the Confederate soldier whose life you saved." Furness invited Lee to attend a reunion of the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry, which Furness commanded. The reunion was to honor G. W. Hodge, whose life Furness saved "in the terrible days before Richmond." Lee cannot attend, but is glad to hear about stories like this, as they promote reconciliation between former enemies, "those of us who had ugly feelings in the 60s are now mellowed and living friends." Lee was invited because he was in charge of the United Confederate Veterans.…
