Says Brooke was trained in the U.S. Navy, resigned to join the Confederate Navy, designed guns (the Brooke gun), and experimented with iron plating. Congratulates Patterson on the capture of the blockade runners "Cornelia" and "R.E. Lee" (names of the ships from the docket). Advises him that the best place to secure adjudication of the prizes is in Boston, as Philadelphia and New York are known for delays. Says Philadelphia's District Attorney claims property cannot be condemned for a year and a day after capture.

Title: Charges and Specifications of Charges Preferred by Acting Rear Admiral S.P. Lee Commanding Mississippi Squadron Against George W. Shallenburger A 2nd Asst Engr of USS "Forest Rose"

Clerical copy of the charges against Shallenburger. He was charged with overstaying his leave of absence by about 10 days (as stated in his diary at GLC02263.02). Charges state he was given a 3 week leave from the USS "Forest Rose" on 1 March 1865. He did not return until 31 March. Endorsed as a true copy by the judge advocate.

Rear Admiral Lee orders Renshaw to investigate an attack reported by the Colonel Chief of Staff, Jose de Chasso. De Chasso's report was relayed by Genl. Franciscos de Ceballos. Sailors "supposed to belong to the Worcester, attacked a Sentinel stationed on the Cavalry Mole."

Titled "Extracts from a Letter of Instructions." The first extract gives information about the positioning of gunboats for "assisting in the defence of posts." The second extract is a reminder to "keep a bright look out for, and use every precaution to guard against, torpedoes!" The third extract reminds sailors to stay in their ships at night. Lee was the commanding officer, with the rank of acting rear admiral, of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron from 1862 to 1864. He was then transferred to the command of the Mississippi River Squadron. Lee was promoted to rear admiral in 1870.

Outlines plans for a blockade "to interdict all trade whatever with the country blockaded by the N. Atlantic Blockading Squadron." Details the boundaries of the blockade within North and South Carolina. Explains that vessels must have "clearances from the Custom House at the Port which they left" in order to pass through the Sounds. Writes that all vessels must contain stores and merchandise or hold "a permit from the Treasury, War or Navy Department." Notes that, "care must be taken not to allow vessels, taking refuge in Hatteras or Ocracoke Inlet in foul weather, to enter the Sounds."…

On recto, is a transcription of an article from the "Richmond Va Examiner" titled "Brilliant Naval Exploit: The "Harriet Lane" Captured, Another Steamer blown up with all on board." The article details the capture of the U.S.S. Harriet Lane at "two o'clock on New Year's morning" in Galveston Bay.
