Brigadier General Lee writes to Colonel Robert Ould, Eastern Confederate agent for the exchange of prisoners. Requests that Ould examine the case of William Meade, a Bugler, Co. L, 1st Virginia, and to evaluate the case for the possibility Meade's exchange. Reports that Meade was taken prisoner December 1861, and was released on parole. Writes, "He is quite young and perhaps hardly understands the nature or obligation of parole- he is such a fine soldier I should like him to be released if possible in any way from his obligation."

Lee, detailing actions of Fitzhugh Lee's cavalry division during May through June 1864, from Grant's crossing of the Rapidan River through the death of General J.E.B. Stuart. Details movement of his forces, battles fought, and general events during the time period. Laments the death General Stuart. Also discusses Union African American troops, whom he accuses of committing "outrages."

Opening with the Wilderness and Spotsylvania battles, Fitz Lee provides a detailed account of Army of Northern Virginia cavalry operations, fighting practically non-stop from May 4, 1864 to April 9, 1865. Writes to his godmother about fighting the Comanche Indians in Oklahoma. Notes his successful recovery from a "severe ordeal." Comments that "Indian warfare is not the most glorious in the world, hard fighting after riding miles and miles through the hot sun...and getting but little if any, glory." He does enjoy the life apart from the warfare. Comments on the hunting and fishing, and his horses (one a captured Comanche pony). Indicates that he will soon go to Camp Cooper, 115 miles south of Camp Radziminski, from where he writes this letter.
