Asks for Hamilton's help if he is traveling to Albany. Is a purchaser, with Hamilton and others, of lands around the St. Lawrence River, the patents for which lands have been taken out of the Land Office in the name of Alexander Macomb. Aside from lands purchased by the state, certain portions of the land picked by a group led by General [Philip] Schuyler were to be paid for by Knox and several others. Would like Hamilton to determine how much Knox needs to pay and to whom he should direct the payment.

Secretary of War Knox writes to his sister-in-law Hannah acknowledging her letter to him the previous June. Knox believes Hannah has done all she can to "consistently" tell Mr. Longman '"the state of things." Knox discusses his land dealings and values, and the prospects of obtaining and selling different lands. States that his brother will deliver this letter and will update her on family news. Reports that they will soon move to Philadelphia (the United States government moved from New York to Philadelphia in December 1790).

References a late letter sent to his wife Lucy stating "that the creditors of your father in England expected to recover from the Commissioners of Bankruptcy, the public security what you held in trust and what passed into your husbands hands." Says that the letter inferred Hannah felt there was hope of the bonds being canceled to recover the securities belonging to Lucy. Notes if Hannah can get back her securities, then Lucy…

Knox relates to Sargent, Parker, and Phillips the assaults and death of his surveyors by "unlawful and armed combinations of individuals" who had only murder as their intention on July 18, 1800. Knox asks that they bear in mind the "law of the Commonwealth passed the 20th day of February 1787, entitled "an act for the more speedy and effectual suppression of Tumults and insurrections in the Commonwealth." Knox wants these perpetrators punished.

Mentions the evacuation of Kingsbridge, Fort Washington, McGowan's Pass, New York City, Brookland (Brooklyn), Paulus Hook, Staten Island, and De Neices (Denyse's Ferry in Brooklyn). Advises Hull to ready his men and states that George Washington, Governor Clinton and himself will arrive soon and may need quarters. Post script states that a small party of Hull's men will be left in Westchester.

Will be staying in Thomaston longer than he planned because his son, Washington, is very ill, likely close to death. If the catastrophe happens, they will wait as long as is necessary, and then set out by land to Boston.

Orders Colonel Hull to travel to Canada to ascertain precisely when Great Britain will "deliver up the posts within the teritories [sic] of the United States..." Asks Hull to learn where the British forts are located and how many men are stationed at each post. Also asks him to obtain information about British cannon and stores at each post for a possible exchange. Instructs Hull to obtain the desired information from Frederick Haldimand, who Knox calls "Commander in Chief of his Britannick Majestys forces in America."
