Knox transmits books donated from Granville Sharp in London to Rhode Island College (present-day Brown University). Informs Manning, President of Rhode Island College, that these books were previously in William Knox's care but William was "prevented by sickness from coming out to America" (William suffered from mental illness). Notes that the books were damaged in transit. Reminds Manning to send a line to Sharp acknowledging receipt of the books.

Adds that the Society, as an institution, is "too young to assume so much importance to appoint a gentleman of your abilities their historiographer..." Noted as a copy on the docket.

On Thursday he brought forward the proposition for adopting the Constitution, and for recommending certain alterations agreeably to the paper herein enclosed [not included]. Later copy. A note at the top of page one states, "Recd from Mr. Bancroft Feb 1857." Knox reports, "The new constitution was adopted in Massachusetts on the 6th instant by a majority of 19. The whole present 355- 187 for it- 168 against it. The minority behave with magnanimity on the occasion declaring they will support it with their lives and fortunes- The Boston people have lost their senses with joy."

Received General Lincoln's recent letter. Writes that "Mr. Lowells character has been placed before the President" but he does not know whether a "personal application" would be worthwhile; believes it would depend on Mr. Lowell's opinion. Adds that the House of Representatives will look at the federal bill tomorrow, which means that the President will not be ready to sign it until 10 August at least, so Mr. Lowell has time to decide. Also discusses a new bill for the collection of revenue.

Written by Knox as Secretary of War to Livingston, an Albany merchant. References Livingston's letter of 31 May. Encloses a bill for 36 dollars to pay Lieutenant Foy the Collector. Says he does not have a copy of the receipt "annexed to Mr. Duer." (Knox owed money to Livingston for a house rental.) Is not sure if it has been refused. Apologizes and says he did not mean to offend.

Has received double pleasure because he knows of Lincoln's character. Tells Lincoln that his future happiness depends on his son's moral impressions. Wants him to be "a man of truth justice candor and humanity, fixed for life to a small farm to the most exalted station." Wants him to accept the enclosed $50 as a token of his respect and gratitude.

Unsigned, but handwriting suggests the author is Henry Knox. The docket, also in Knox's hand, says that a copy of this draft was never sent to Lincoln, but a later version, dated 9 May, was sent, and no copy was retained of that. Writes that he received Lincoln's last letter, and has every day planned to write back, but hasn't until now, and is ashamed of it. Regarding Lincoln's letter, Knox declares that canals are a favorite hobby of his, and he discusses the merits of the canal proposal in Lincoln's letter. Knox discusses with Lincoln matters concerning their business affairs. He tells Lincoln that Henry Jackson is having a difficult time advancing anything, and he asks Lincoln that he not bring any action against Jackson, "as it will have a most pernicious" [effect]. Knox says he will try to get Lincoln the money by mid-summer. Knox goes on to talk about other related matters and offers ideas about how to best deal with associates who are requesting money or who are not paying up.

Knox tells Lincoln that he has "paid on Gorhams execution 2000 Dollars, independent of the Sheriffs fees." Knox appropriated an additional $1800 to be raised and paid to Lincoln. Knox says it would not have been difficult for Lincoln's friends "to get that sum from one of the banks, renewable for the period." Knox will send the "articles engaged" as soon as the weather improves.
