Discusses the amount of provisions needed at Fort Schuyler for Jefferds party. Provides further instructions if the number of provisions at Fort Schuyler is insufficient.

Knox thanks him for his last letter, which also enclosed a letter from the Marquis de Lafayette. Applied to Mr. Macomb [he spells it "Macombe"] for the certificates he asked for, "and he kindly promised to write me himself and to obtain others from the gentlemen whose names you mention. As soon as I shall receive these certificates I shall have the pleasure of forwarding them to you, and from the favorable sentiments Mr Macombe expressed to me I conclude that they could not fail of serving fully your purposes." Contains two letters written on the same date. In the first letter, written to Jefferson, Knox introduces John Coffin Jones "and his Lady." Commends the "honor" and "liberal Fortune" of Jones, a Boston merchant. On verso, Knox informs Jones that he has furnished him with two letters of introduction: one for Jefferson and the other for the Marquis de Lafayette. Hopes Jones and his wife will return from their European excursion "with undiminished affection for your native Country."

As they were so kind as to previously give certificates for safe passage of American ships to Spanish ports, he is emboldened to ask another request of the same nature. Requests permission for the vessel "Jefferson," captained by Josiah Roberts, to stop at Spanish ports en route to the northwest coast of America (see GLC02437.05192). Asks for permission only if it is consistent with their duties.

Writes a lengthy letter of condolence on the death of Jarvis's wife. Comments that religion and philosophy may help ease the pain along with the passage of time. Notes how happy she must have been to endure such pain. Also mentions her helpless newborn baby and for Jarvis to see that someone is looking after her. Refers to the "Creator" in explaining the nature of life and death. See GLC02437.06232 for Jarvis's letter to Knox informing him of the death of his wife.

Written from Montpelier, Knox's home in Thomaston, Maine. Regrets that he has not had time, until now, to respond to Jackson's last letter. Reports that the vessels that usually transport their goods are detained on the river due to tides. Discusses the recent departure of the "Duke" (likely the Duc du Liancourt), and how this affects his ability to continue financial transactions. Mentions making a contract with the government on lumber. Discusses a plan to build a brig of certain dimensions, to ship a variety of goods, and asks Jackson to acquire supplies for it, which he lists.

Discusses his future financial prospects. Thanks Jackson for his offer to help Knox pay off any and all of his debts. Believes he will be able to have financial security in his old age. Discusses shipping and trade interests in Europe and India, relating to his attempts to sell lumber abroad. Mentions that he owes money to his carpenter, Mr. [Ebenezer] Dunton.

Discusses land deals and legal agreements. Says he does not believe Mr. [Thomas?] Winthrop can be absolved from the agreement. Quotes part of the clause on the agreement that states the lands will be conveyed to Winthrop once they are located and appraised. Further discusses in great detail Mr. Winthrop's legal obligations concerning the land. Also discusses the current surveys being conducted and stresses that they must continue regardless of troubles that may arise.

Letter is not signed but appears to be Knox's handwriting. Discusses the ongoing conflict among the settlers and Knox's surveyors. Marked "copy." Relates that General [Rufus] Putnam told him about a plan developed by the Massachusetts legislature's Committee of Eastern Lands regarding the Waldo patent.
