Knox writes to Colonel Sears, Chancellor Livingston, Governor Clinton, and Broome, a merchant and bookseller. Recommends Colonel Stevens, possibly Ebenezer Stevens, to the recipients' acquaintance. Relates that Stevens will be taking up residence in New York City to work as "a dealer in lumber of all sorts, and probably to construct, for buildings of various kinds."

Knox asks Schuyler to help him arrange transportation for the Minister of France to St. Johns (possibly present-day Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec). Asks if there are boats on Lake George or Lake Champlain that could adequately transport the minister to St. Johns. Inquires as to the number of men he should send from West Point to facilitate the minister's transportation.

Secretary of War Knox tells Savage he read of the death of Savage's son Captain Joseph Savage. As he is fairly certain this is untrue, Knox wonders how that misinformation appeared in a Worcester newspaper. Knox tells about hearing from the port collector of Savannah Mr. Habersham as as well as Captain John Smith, both of whom "remember nothing of such an event."

Knox tells Sayre despite several letters sent to him, he still has not heard from Sayre. Says he presented Sayre's plan to the president. The magnitude of the plan was such that the president could not give an explicit answer. Talks about the "expectation of war between Great Britain and Spain" and the public attention it has managed to capture. Docketed by Knox.

Later copy. References several of Sargent's letters and apologizes for not responding sooner. Hopes the arrival of "the Governor" will afford him an opportunity to visit the Atlantic States. Mentions the "political storm" pervading in Europe. Says the French are the cause of it. The copyist noted that the paper was thin and that he found the continuation of this letter with Colonel Sargent's son (see GLC02437.05894). It was copied on 21 November 1856. Knox writes to Crevecoeur, French consul at New York. Expresses his regret at Crevecoeur's loss of important papers. Apparently responding to Crevecoeur's request for information related to the Revolutionary War, writes, "...I was not at the frontiers during the War having always been with the Army under the immediate orders of His Ex Gen Washington[.]"

Later copy. Writes that he wrote to General [James] Wilkinson on 3 April to ask about powder and the proofing of artillery at Fort Washington. Has apparently not received a reply. Stresses the importance of these tests because there has been some doubt about the quality of last year's powder. Urges him to complete the tests. Place not listed, however, another letter (GLC02437.05458) written on the same day places Knox in Philadelphia.

Reports that President George Washington directed him to inform St. Clair that proposed treaty negotiations between the U.S. and the hostile Indians north of the Ohio River is to take place at Lower Sandusky around 1 June. Later copy. Written by Knox as Secretary at War to Major Sargent. References receiving Sargent's letters of 20 April and 1 and 2 May. Says the difficulties in connection with calling out the militia "by an order to a subordinate officer of a state" will continue until Congress fixes it. Hopes the large bodies of regular troops will provide security in the Ohio Territory, making any calls on the militia unnecessary. Says Colonel Ebenezer Sproat seems to deserve compensation for his services and that the matter will be handled soon.

Explains that Mr. Caleb Swan will be taking thirty five thousand dollars in post bank notes for the pay of the army, and that Sargent's name has been added to the notes for greater security. When Swan wants to exchange the notes for cash, he will need Sargent's to do so; asks that Sargent oblige.
