Grant crossing a river to Covington and Harriet Beecher Stowe's "panegyric on President Lincoln." Includes Civil War articles, such as "The Success of Lincoln and Johnson a Death Blow to the Rebellion," referring to the election of 1864. Other articles comment on the movements of the Army of the Potomac, Yankee prisoners, and a mutiny, blockades, and "Southern Harmony." Discusses an accusation made against Samuel Shaw and the court proceedings. Reports that testimony depicted Shaw as a man of good character. Left before the end of proceedings, but believes that "nothing had then been said which I conceived could induce a verdict unfavorable to Shaw." However, as the jury is taking a long time to deliberate, there may be points in the case that he missed hearing. Considers some of the legal questions involved in the case.
