At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title: Attention South!! Abolish slavery.

Abolitionist folk art depicting a Black man as weeping and chained and shackled, surrounded by green curtains with yellow tassels. At top left are the words "Attention South!!" with the word "Abolish" at left and "Slavery" at right, signed in block letters at bottom "J.O.E. 1857 N.Y." All lettering is in red. Painted on laid paper that has been mounted to a sheet of marbled paper.
