At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Subject is wearing black gloves. His right hand rests on the front of his coat, while his left hand holds his hat. Ink inscription on recto "Capt McGowan." Ink inscription on verso "Capt John McGowan. U.S. Rev Service." Photographers imprint on verso: "Israel & Co. Photographers, 125 Baltimore Street Baltimore."
