At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Hylan writes to the editor of the "Nation War Record and Review," as Mayor of New York. He responds to the question: "After Death - What?" Hylan writes that death is like birth, and man passes into a larger world than the one in which he lives. He uses this theme as a comfort for the high casualty rate of World War I.
