At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brigadier General Howe writes to Weber, commanding at Harper's Ferry. Asks Weber to order four companies of Ohio Infantry (belonging to a regiment which was engaged at Monocacy) to proceed to Duffields, West Virginia and remain there until they receive further orders. Notes that the regiments should bring subsistence for several days. Written on Headquarters, Military District of Harper's Ferry stationery. Contains Howe's stamp at the bottom of the page.
