At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Serving as Royal Governor of the Colony of New Plymouth, Hinckley approves sale of Scippeag's land to the Bournes. Bassit, Marne, Timothy, and Oliver Conant sign as witnesses. Scippeag signs with his mark, an "X". The lower lefthand side of the document is missing a section of paper.
