Title: Report of Exploration of a part of the Arkansas grant in New Mexico in Aug. 1881
Describes exploration of the grant in the eastern half of the state. Discusses the fertility of the land, its potential for irrigation (farming) or herding. Mentions (see p. 13) finding a basin with fossils, once part of an inland sea. The expedition began near Roswell, but had to repeatedly move north in an attempt to cross the Pecos River. The grant (apparently) included parts of modern-day Guadalupe, Debaca, Chaves and possibly Eddy Counties, almost entirely on the west side of the Pecos River.
