Portrait of General Ulysses S. Grant. Grant wears a black mourning armband, his left hand tucked in his coat in a "Napoleonic" pose. Probably taken while Lincoln's courtege traveled through Philadelphia. (See GLC01270, carte de visite).

Title: Scenes from the battle-field at Gettysburg. Residence of the old patriot who entered the Union lines during the battle with his musket and was wounded thrice. The figure on the porch is the old patriot.

The name "John Burns" is penciled in on the mount next to the printed title to indicate that he is the "old patriot" in question. View of John Burns's house, which is no longer standing, and surrounding buildings. Very sharp and clear view of the farm buildings. Note the decorative window coverings. The fence has been dismantled and the property shows signs of the battle. Notation on verso: "8912." Signed photograph of Grant as Lt. General, taken by Frederick Gutekunst. Standing portrait of General Grant with his left hand in his vest, taken in the spring of 1865. Grant is wearing a black mourning band on his left arm in remembrance of Abraham Lincoln, who had recently been assassinated. Verso contains docket with autograph note signed by J. Harper and plate of Pittsburgh bookseller. Harper's note states that he got the autograph from Grant himself, and is giving it to a friend, Mrs. Chuffat. Same photograph as GLC01320.01.
