At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title: Rachel. A play in three acts

First play written, produced, and acted by African-Americans, attempting to dramatize racial inequities. The program notes call the play "the first attempt to use the stage for race propaganda in order to enlighten the American people relative to the lamentable condition of ten millions of colored citizens in this free republic." Printed by the Cornhill Company. Brown boards. Angelina Weld Grimke was the daughter of Archibald Grimke, nephew of the Grimke sisters.
