Theodore Goold enlisted in the army on 21 June 1861 in Rochester, New York, as a private. James Goold enlisted in the army on 29 August 1862 in Macedon, New York, as a private. They were both mustered into the "F" Co. New York 25th Infantry in August 1862 and transferred into "I" Co. New York 44th Infantry on 19 June 1863. Most of the correspondence is written to their parents and brother Johnny. The majority of the content describes daily activities and duties in their regiment, and their living conditions at camp. Tells his father that he "is well at the present with the exception of a slight cold" and that he is standing guard in place of someone who is sick. He may get the job of carrying the mail, which he states "would be good exercise for me and make me strong. "Asks his father to let him know if he thinks he could get a furlough after he gets paid, so that he could come home for thirty days. Tells him that when he gets to the regiment that he will send home a box of clothes, a sword bayonet, and his revolver. Writes to his parents from Emory Hospital informing them that he is not very sick and will probably be well in two weeks. He has not heard anything from his brother James, but speculates that he has been taken prisoner. Tells them that he has received a pass to "fall to the rear on account of his sickness," which he says is "slight, it is a touch of the Rhumatism..."

Tells his father that they have not been paid yet, but will send the remainder of his money to Uncle Francis. Letter discusses the mild winter they are having and what will happen at the farm in the spring. States that the letter is short because he must go on guard soon.

Writes to his father that he and his brother James are in good health and spirits. Reports that they will both be shipped to the Penisula in less than a week. Describes the photograph that he had taken in case he is hurt in battle. "I think we will move soon, and maby, go into a fight, so I thought I would have my picture taken for I might get hit in the next fight and I would let you see a little what I looked like..." Tells his father that he must cut the letter short becuase he has to go to church. Written at the Culpeper Court House.

Writes to his mother from Emory Hospital to tell her that he received her letter and is very sorry to hear that their father is sick. Gives her details about his trip to the Regular Barracks. Tells her that Miss Brown came for a visit on the second day of his absence. He is disappointed that she did not leave her address because he gets a "great deal of pleasure from her acquaintance." He reports that, "in regard to James, I have not given up yet though there is certainly not much hope of our ever seeing him again."
