At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title: [Parole of General Frank Gardner and Lieutenant Alcee Dupre]

Paroles of honor signed by Gardner and Dupre as prisoners of war after the surrender of Port Hudson, Louisiana on 9 July 1863. "We ... Officers of the Confederate Army, and prisoners of War, do hereby give this, our Parole of Honor, that we will not escape or attempt to escape from the building or premises, now occupied by us." Signed by Captain Eugene Tindale as a witness. Gardner was a Confederate major general.
