One photograph entitled, "Ruins at Manassas Junction," taken by Alexander Gardner dated March 1862. Image is of ruins of several buildings used by the Confederate railroad company, Orange and Alexandria, as a depot. The remains of a few mud huts, destroyed train cars, an engine, and numerous broken wagons fill the picture. In the right foreground stand three men and in the far left background are several horses. This page was taken from "Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War."

A print of a photograph of a large group of soldiers posed in front of tents. Some men in the group wear civilan dress. The second line of a small sign in the middle of the image appears to read "Signal Corps." A road and a long horse rail [fence] are in the foreground of the image, while what appears to be an orchard stands in the background. Graphite inscription on verso: "Def[enses] of Wash[ington]. Gardner XXX 732." Print is unmounted. The US Army Signal Corps was established on March 3rd, 1863 so the photograph has to date from after that.

A print of a photograph of General William Hoffman and three others. Hoffman is the man leaning against the banister on the right hand side of the image. He and two other men are standing on the steps of the building beneath a sign reading: "Office of the Commissary General of Prisoners." The office itself was located in Washington, D.C. at F St. and 20th St. NW. The address on the building reads "148." A fourth man peers out the window of the building. A print of nine Union officers. Photo was most likely taken in Washington. Two women peer from a window on the left hand side of the image. A young boy wearing a cap sits in front of the men. The soldier to the far left holds a bugle, while the soldier to the far right wears a gray uniform, possibly a state guard or local militia uniform. Present are a colonel or major (second from right upper row) and 1st lieutenant (upper row right-most). Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXXI 875."

A print of a photograph of a large group of civilians. The assemblage is posed in front of three long, white government shops. Most are probably workers employed in the buildings by the government. Black laborers wearing aprons and holding tools are on the far left of the image. A policeman stands eighth from the right. Washington became a major center for army services during the war. Numerous government repair shops [some massive in size] employing hundreds of skilled and unskilled workers were established to keep the armies running. Inscription on verso: "Gardner XXIX 858."

A print of a photograph of the Washington, DC headquarters of Brigadier General Hardin. Brigadier General Martin D. Hardin put was in command ofthe defenses of Washington from 1864 to the end of the war. He is just left of the tree on the corner, missing the left arm he lost in Confederate guerrilla ambush. The glass of the lamp post on the corner reads "19th Street West." The headquarters was located at the intersection of 19th St. NW and Pennsylvania Ave. The crowd consists mainly of well dressed civilian men and women with a few soldiers. Taken from Gardner's "Photographic Sketchbook, Vol II. No. 92" with text accompanying panel. Also includes text description page. The ruins of the once-great, eight acre Haxalll's Flour Mill stand at right. The hydropowered mill burned in the large fire that consumed thrity squares of the business section of Richmond. Crenshaw's Mill across the canal and the wooden shops on the right were preserved. The canal was used to relieve supplying pressures on the stressed Confederate rail roads. Severak civilians pose on the bridge.

A print of a photograph of six Union officers. The tent to the rear is a "Sibley" tent attached to log base [wintered or garissoned for long-term dwelling] and appears to be attached to an A-frame tent in the front. A brick chimney had been built behind the Sibley quarters and a tin smoke pipe pokes throught the A-frame tent. The group appears to be all officers, and the two men standing on the right wear oiled cloth kepi covers. Inscription on verso: "Gardner XI or (IX) 291."
