Forrest, commander of a cavalry brigade in the Army of Tennessee, writes from Headquarters (of an unspecified post), "twenty miles west of Garrison." Informs the authorities of Rome "There is a Federal Force of Fifteen Hundred cavalry marching on your place I am pursuing them prepare your selves to Repulse them- they have 2 Mountain Howitzers. I will be close on them I have kild 300 of thir men They are Runing for their lives."

Congratulations to troops for all their victorious battles. Issued by Union Major General Forrest to his troops during the last year of the war. Forrest signs in print as Commanding District of Mississippi and Eastern Louisiana. Pencil inscription "To Mrs. Carter with compliments of Julius W. Lancaster" on first page. On line 19 of the text "Jacksonville" is struck and replaced with "Johnsonville."

Details the fact that "the troops of this Department have been surrendered. ...That we are BEATEN is a self evident fact, and any further resistance on our part would be justly regarded as the very height of folly and rashness." Bond was "No. 465." Signed twice by Nathan Bedford Forrest as president of the railroad company; co-signed by company secretary, Alpheus Monroe Fowlkes. On verso, includes endorsement of the State of Alabama, signed 25 May 1870 by Governor William Hugh Smith. Bottom half of the page consists of 33 small $40 bond notes. Includes an account balance on verso, signed by a register [name illegible].

Title: Selma marion memphis railroad company first mortgage eight percent bond.

Signed by President of the railroad company, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Forrest, an inveterate opponent of Reconstruction, used such ventures to rebuild his fortune after the Civil War. Includes 28 coupons for $40 attached. Second page includes an endoresement of the bond by the state of Alabama, and a list of "persons allowed" to take out a bond.

Reply to Garner's order, stating that he cannot "guard the mines at Bloomfield and Fairfield" because he has no troops. However "as soon as Col Wharton returns" with his 8,000 troops, "I will be at your service." An initialed note ("B.B.") from Braxton Bragg on verso states that Forrest should remove any men he has in town, as small guards at Bloomfield and Fairfield "are absolutely necessary...and must be furnished." Written during the Confederate invasion of Kentucky, while prospects for the campaign remained bright.

Reports that local citizens have complained about property destruction by Confederate troops. Claims that their men are doing more harm than if the Union forces were there. Recommends replacing officers and moving the troops. Argues "As a general thing there ought to be a change, and that soon, as the complaints are becoming loud & Heavy."

Writes to Colonel Mason about the shelling of Columbia, Tennessee and the situation of prisoners during the Tennessee Campaign: "I told him [Union General Edward Hatch] that we had no forces in the town excepting a skirmish line, that his fire has endangered his own wounded who are in the town, and that if it did not cease I should place the wounded directly under it. After this the firing ceased." Discusses his correspondence with Hatch about a prisoner exchange and his feelings that it implied that there were no Union infantry to the front of his position.
