Ewing writes to Scammon, Brigadier General commanding the 2nd Division, Kanawha in Fayette, Virginia, to state that he saw Scammon's family in Cincinnati, Ohio. Encloses a letter from them (not present). Says he urged Mrs. Scammon to come with them but she declined. Written shortly before Scammon was promoted to Brigadier General in December 1862, and before Ewing was promoted to Brigadier General in November 1862. Ewing, foster brother William Tecumseh Sherman, became his most trusted subordinate. He serve at South Mountain, Antietam, in the Second Vicksburg campaign and Missionary Ridge.…

Writes to Brigadier General Scammon, commanding 2nd Division Kanawha. Introduces an informant named Henry McGlaughlin, a citizen of Virginia and a former scout for the 30th Regiment O.V.I. [Ohio Volunteer Infantry?]. There is an autograph endorsement on the verso, possibly by Scammon but unsigned, noting the location of Confederate Generals John B. Floyd and Humphrey Marshall.

Says he has been in Chicago on business and will leave soon. Describes Chicago as "dull," and the houses in the city as being, " ... the merest shells - which the north west wind, would blow into the Prairie, ... But the people, who are 'sand blind,' think them magnificent structures." Criticizes a client he was in Chicago to do business with.
