At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Catharine Alexander Duer, also known as Lady Kitty Duer, wife of William Duer, writes that she and her husband have sent the bearer, their old servant Henry, to Philadelphia so he could check on his petition to Congress. Hopes Knox will extend his friendship to Henry and help him receive whatever Congress decides is due him. Sends love on behalf of herself and her husband to Mrs. Knox.
