Writes that he hopes to be able to get to St. Louis before the presidential election in order to campaign. Briefly discusses an early candidate for nomination, Edward Bates from Missouri, and states that he does not believe that Bates's supporters will vote for Barrett, who now supports Breckinridge, the Southern Democratic candidate. Corwin served as governor of Ohio, U.S. congressman and senator, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury (1850-1853), and U.S. minister to Mexico (1861-1864).
