Cooper, an inventor and philanthropist, replies to a letter from Sherman, a United States Representative from Ohio. Referring to the pending possibility of Civil War, states " I infer ... that there is much doubt that an arrangement will be made in time to secure the adhesion of the border states ... I am surprised and astonished when I see how little our Republican friends are aware of the widespread ruin that must attend a breaking up of a government, when all its parts must be thrown into the greatest possible doubt and uncertainty about the mode by which an reorganization can be affected…

Title: [ledger of Peter Cooper]

Contains alphabetical list of names in the style of a ledger or account book, often with numbers and/or letters written in the column before the name. This appears to be the original use for the volume. Most names in the latter half of the alphabet have been crossed out. There are notes in a different hand concerning scientific, industrial, and medical matters that fill the balance of the volume. These notes contain, among other things, cures for rheumatism and cholera, and methods for the manufacture of glue and processing of iron.

"...the cole being largest would role away from it in part towards the center and out side of the furnace leaving the ore and limestone in a position in the furnace where it will be likely to setel without much change..." Possibly a note written to himself. States in part, "Suppose we introduce the assid and the esence of Lemon and Sugar and then cut the slabs a little thicker and dry them the whole length of cooler so that the art[?]al will only require soaking and dissolving for use. It could then be put up in roles [sic] or squares just the size for a quart." Bottom half of the page is missing.

Reads in part, "God has made our future peace depend on virtue -- and our national health on wise and temperate use of the blessings entrusted to our care." On page four he begins to introduce Lincoln but does not finish. With cross-outs and corrections.

Suggests to Sherman, a Senator from Ohio, that Johnson and Congress require Southern Congressional members to take an Oath binding them to maintain the Constitution of the United States. Also recommends "that all persons who may at any time on the floor of Congress either advocate the right to secede from the Union, or the repudiation of the National debt, or propose any unrepublican laws ... shall be declared guilty of treason, and the party so offending,…
