Discusses the recent engagement of Hutson to his daughter, Emmeline Colcock. Says he will be very sad to see his daughter go because she has been a great help with her younger siblings since her mother died. He consents to the marriage and has confidence and trust in Hutson. He opens his house to him, and gives love to Hutson's family. Emmeline Colcock died late in 1861 before she and Hutson were married. Their engagement is also discussed in GLC08165.28 and GLC08165.30.

A letter of condolence upon the death of Emmeline Colcock, Charles' fiance and Colcock's daughter. Charles was then on furlough from the 1st South Carolina Infantry, where he served as a Corporal during the Civil War. Colcock refers to Charles' letter from 7 September 1861, in which Charles hoped for Emmeline's recovery, commenting that he weeps when he reads it. He feels bound to Charles. Colcock wrote a note in pencil at the bottom of p. 3 indicating that "Willie has arrived." Willie is William F. Colcock, Jr.

Encloses a copy of a dispatch from Marion Colcock informing Charles that his request for an extended furlough has been rejected by the Confederate Secretary of War Leroy P. Walker. Explains how William, Colcock's son, was informed of his sister Emmeline's death via telegraphs, and mentions some confusion in their communications.

Gives family news. Mentions that Thomas F. Drayton was promoted to brigadier general, and that they are attempting to get Willie (William F. Colcock, Jr.) onto Drayton's staff. He takes comfort in writing to someone who is mourning as he is. Laments the loss of his daughter Emmeline, and extols her virtuous nature. Gives information about his six other children. States he has been to McPhersonville and found out that Mitchell has died. Hutson was engaged to Emmeline Colcock in 1861 but she died of typhoid fever in late 1861 while he was away. He was a Corporal, 1st South Carolina Infantry, during the Civil War.
