Written by Butler in retirement. Reference de Villers letter of 29 December 1807. Expresses sympathy for the illness of Mrs. de Villers. Wishes them to live for many years more, but says they probably need a better climate than the one found in Savannah. Wants de Villers to dispose of the rice for the most it will bring and to transmit the net proceeds to his daughter Frances. Wants him to lose no time doing this. Hopes to see him and Judge Jones at Hampton. Postscript asks if he has heard from Mr. Seagrove?

Asks Knox's pardon "for the intrusion of a letter on business yesterday morning - I had not heard 'till late in the afternoon of your House being a House of Mourning, or I shou[l]d never have broke in on you at such a season." This is in reference to the death of Knox's son Marcus (see GLC02437.05152 and .05162). Sends his sympathies. Tells Knox that "true indeed is the observation of the Poet that We are all Pensioners on the bounty of an hour. Such are the terms on which He who Wills all things gave us life; and we must submit." Signer of the U.S. Constitution.

A long, narrow notebook, once probably a single folded sheet of paper, now two separate items. The notebook records comments by Lancey [Lansing], Patterson, Randolph, Hamilton, Wilson, Madison, Williams, Sherman and Ellsworth. The first item consists of a long narrow sheet containing two pages of writing. The second item is a sheet folded three times with debate notes on the first page, a number of blanks, and stray notes on the last page concerning Butler's personal business on the Walnut Street Wharf. Franklin/Rutledge proposals with population figures. Docketed: "Proposition from Doctor Franklin June 30, 87- with sundry reports & Calculations from two Committees." Franklin proposed an equal number of delegates for the second branch of government and fixing their salary (p. 1), while Rutledge proposed basing the number of "suffrages" upon each state's revenues (p. 2).
