Published by Thomas Drew, Jr. Printed wrappers with illustration, including a print of Burritt. Second edition. Includes the essay "Buying a Brother from Bondage" which describes the purchase of Frederick Douglass' freedom. Cover and some inner pages contain water stain. Accompanied by a small card printed at the American Tract Society in Boston, Massachusetts. The card, entitled "Friend, Come to Jesus," encourages Christian conversion. Card measures 13.1 x 8.7 cm.

Transmits a circular (GLC 2448.03.02), an account of the organization of the National Compensation Emancipation Society. Asks Murray to read the circular and attempt to "connect yourself with the movement more directly." Invites Murray to speak at the Society's first annual meeting, to be held 12 May 1858 in New York. The paper's objective is to "unite the millions of all sections and parties who deprecate the existence of Slavery, from moral, political, or economical considerations, in a plan of co-operation for its peaceful and gradual extinction, by which the Southern States shall receive a fair and honorable compensation..."
