Remarks that he believes it unlikely that the court will not accommodate his time restraints as he is serving a public duty. Asks that if the trial has to be heard, the recipient must draw up and send him an affidavit so that he can sign it.

Title: Of the validity of the laws granting Livingston & Fulton the exclusive right of using fire and steam to propel boats or vessels

Legal review of the Robert R. Livingston - Robert Fulton steamboat monopoly case. Burr examines the case from two reference points, "1st - With reference to the Laws and Constitution of New York. 2d - As to the Constitution and Laws of the United States." Argues against the monopoly granted to Fulton and Livingston in a point by point analysis. With autograph summation signed by Burr on the last page stating that he made all attempts to make his remarks intelligible.

Burr informs Rutgers that Mr. Beckman has been searching titles for Alexander Hamilton and since he has not found him, he returned the titles. States that the titles are to be exhibited by Thomas L. Ogden at Hamilton's office at 69 Stone Street. Asks him to make sure it is done this afternoon and advises that Ogden will be staying at home for this purpose. No year is included in the date.

Burr writes in partial cypher to his son-in-law after his duel with Alexander Hamilton. In the text that is not in cypher, Burr states that the jury has adjourned until Monday, July 23, and that the results will determine whether or not he flees. He indicates that there is sentiment against him by Governor DeWitt Clinton and his allies. He thanks him for an earlier letter of support. At the end of the text is "Enclose to Ch. Biddle, Phila." Charles Biddle was a friend of Burr's. The second and third pages are in cypher. Date is from docket. The letter was written no earlier than July 13, 1804…

Writes in a loving manner to his 11 year old daughter about her last letters in which she told him she had a headache and toothache. ". . . too much for one poor little girl to suffer at one time, I am sure . . . you must fight them as well as you can till I come, and then I will engage to keep them at bay." Wonders if she received his last letter as she did not acknowledge its receipt. Asks her to copy what she has translated of Terence (Publius Terentius Afer) into a book in very fair handwriting. Burr denies having any of the money owed to McLachlan's son, Philip Garniss. Says Mr. Gardiner has $2,600 for the her son and that he is trying to help secure for the boy. Says if she tries to take it, the money will be returned to Mr. Gardiner, and assures her the money will be safe. "I take the liberty Madam, to advise you not to speak in improper or offensive terms of Mr. Plant or any of your neighbours - remember you once lost an estate by the unguarded use of your tongue."
