Title: Civil War Collection of 49 photographs [decimalized]

Various stereocard and other smaller photograph prints, most unmounted, relating to the Civil War in Virginia. The images come from Thomas G. Knight, who worked in Brady's studios (it is said) as a teenager. Included are images of Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, Petersburg and various forts around Washington. Includes images of soldiers playing ball, some freedmen (unidentified location), Winfield Scott and battlefields with soldiers' remains (Fredericksburg - Marye's Heights; Gettysburg; trenches at Petersburg).

One undated image entitled "Brady's Incidents of the War (General McClellan)," was taken by Mathew Brady. Image is of General Morrell's Brigade at Miner's Hill, Virginia. The men are gathered around a tree trunk. Those pictured include the aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Williams, a surgeon named Walters, Lieutenant Colonel Alfred V. Colburn, and Lieutenant Colonel N.B. Switzer. A note below the photograph reads, "Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1861 by M.B. Brady, in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the District of Columbia."

A sergeant stands to the right of the canon with his arm raised, as if giving the order to fire. A private to the left of the canon holds a ram rod, suggesting that the cannon had just been loaded. Several of the men's faces are blurred, but the cannon appears in sharp focus.

Each carte de visite is pasted on scalloped paper. Produced by Mathew Brady's studio to be photographed and published in a reduced size as its own carte de visite. Each general's surname is written in ink directly under his image. They include William S. Rosecrans, John G. Foster, Nathaniel P. Banks, Franz Sigel, Benjamin F. Full length standing portrait, holding cane and hat. Russell was an influential reporter for The Times of London, a British newspaper. He won international recognition following his reporting of the Crimean War from 1851-1855. During the American Civil War, Russell reported on the July 21, 1861 First Battle of Bull Run, in which an initially successful Union attack gave way to a strong Confederate counterattack and a Union retreat. Russell's account of the retreat included a description of "the disgraceful conduct of the [Union] troops," a charge which was widely denounced by the Northern…

Vignetted half-length standing portrait of Union general Henry Slocum, Sr. in Napoleonic pose. Clothing, hands, and parts of face heavily painted over. Water stains at the edge. Slocum led and participated in several campaigns throughout the American Civil War, including the Maryland Campaign and the Carolina Campaign. He resigned his commission on September 28, 1865 and returned to New York, where he unsuccessfully ran for New York secretary of state that year. Slocum served three terms as a Democratic Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives (from 1869 to 1873 and from 1883 to 1885).
