Milledge L. Boham states officers "just from Richmond" related news that an approaching South Carolina regiment will be sent to the York River, Virginia. Hopes that South Carolina Governor Pickens may prevent this; writes to notify Pickens in the absence of Confederate General P.T. Beauregard. Differentiates between the South Carolina regiment and "our" men, from the "upcountry"; "they can stand that climate better than others." Describes a recent battle between his "advanced pickets" and "the enemy" which produced three enemy casualties. Among his troops, one soldier was killed and another…

"With the view to counteract the unfounded assumption that this State has hitherto failed to furnish to the common service her full quota of troops, I beg to add that it appears...this State had contributed to the Confederate service between forty five and fifty thousand soldiers within a fraction of one sixth of her entire white population..."

Replies to Beauregard's forwarded report by William Echols of 20 April 1863. "I have directed Col. Shannon to call on two Divisions...for the month of May, which I hope will enable the Engineer to complete the works, as the cultivation of the provision crop... is growing daily more important and there is great unwillingness on the part of the planters to send their hands to the Coast at this particular period."

Copying an urgent telegram from General Beauregard. "If two thousand (2000) or three thousand (3000) small arms called for by my Chief of Ordnance from Col. Gorgas be not furnished I must disband several six months regiments lately called out." Bonham notes that earlier "I gave notice I could not arm them" and was told by Gorgas in July and September "that arms would be provided."

Dating based on uniform (Federal-style dated to 4/1861 per Lord & Wise). Bonham holds a hat with non-standard insigna (Palmetto?). Bonham served in the Confederate Congress from 1862-1863 and then served as governor of SC from 1863. Ink inscription on mount: "Milledge L. Bonham, S.C." Portrait shows some white insect damage.
