Written in response to rumors and allegations from the Whig party that Franklin Pierce is religiously intolerant. States that "[i]n American political contests the seraching questions out to be ever, as to a candidate, 'Is he honest? is he capable? Is He Faithful to the Constitution?' while an approach to any thing like the popery cry of the British Tory party, or an appeal to a sect as such, ought to be severely denounced as violative of the spirit of our institutions."
