At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in a clerical hand and signed by Colonel Beall as commander of the Confederate Marine Corps to Dr. Stribling as superintendent of the insane asylum at Staunton, Virginia. Has been directed by the Secretary of the Navy to inquire if a marine inflicted with insanity can be accommodated at Staunton.
