Title: Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign [complete album of 61 photographs]

This is the complete album as published, and is more complete than GLC 2833 (36 photos). This album includes "Sherman and his Generals" and most of Sherman's campaign from Chattanooga, through Atlanta and Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Columbia, S.C., and views of Charleston and Fort Sumter. The image of John Ross's home appears to be that of Cherokee Indian chief John Ross, who left the house during the Trail of Tears.

Title: Camp of 31st Pennsylvania infantry, and headquarters Graham's brigade

View of large field with the camp of the 31st infantry visible in the center. The 31st was a regiment of Pennsylvania volunteers organized in Harrisburg in June 1863 and mustered out in August 1863. Fence runs diagonally across two-thirds of the image. A few soldiers are pictured standing near the tents. Another smaller camp is seen in the distance, to the right of the main camp. Homes are visible in the far background, in front of a large forest of bare trees.

Page removed from the album "Photographic Views of the Sherman Campaign." Two trees appear in sharp focus in foreground. The camera is elevated and shows a landscape of the terrain below the ridge. Orchard Knob was the site of a battle that took place on November 23, 1863. Confederate soldiers had been stationed on the Knob, but were pushed back to Missionary Ridge upon the advance of about 14,000 Union soldiers. Union General Ulysses S. Grant later used Orchard Knob as an observation post.

Missionary Ridge had served as a Confederate stronghold from September to October 1863, when General Braxton Bragg's army laid seige to the Union army positioned at Chattanooga. On November 25th, Union soldiers captured Missionary Ridge and held it as a logistics base for General William T. Sherman's 1864 campaigns through Atlanta.

Page removed from the album "Photographic Views of the Sherman Campaign." Entrenchments in the foreground with distant view of small town or village. Wagon tracks criss-cross across the image. The sky has been double-printed. Resaca was the site of a May 13-15, 1864 battle between Union forces led by General William T. Sherman and Confederate troops commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston. Sherman employed a flanking technique that proved successful in overpowering Johnston's command, winning the battle for the Union.

A man sits on a fallen tree trunk on the right side of the road. Buzzard Roost refers to a gap between the mountains north of Resaca, Georgia through which Union General William T. Sherman directed two columns to meet Confederate troops during the May 9, 1864 Battle of Rocky Face Ridge. The 5-day battle lasted from May 7 - May 13 and resulted in a Union victory.

Confederate Brigadier General Francis A. Shoup supervised construction of fortifications along the north bank of the Chattahoochee River during the summer of 1864, in the lead up to the July 5, 1864 skirmish at Pace's Ferry. The Confederates were forced to retreat across the river to the southern bank. They were pursued by Union soldiers who crossed the river on July 9, 1864.
