At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Governor Bonham's secretary asks the state agent to turn over for prosectuion "the names of the Sheriffs who have made default in executing the law in relation to procuring Slave Labor - together wiht the names of witnesses &c.... in all such cases as you think can be successfully made out."
