At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses how the British successfully attacked and took control of their village (Ogdensburg, New York) on February 22, 1813 during the War of 1812. Comments on how her husband was captured and paroled and remarks on the growing strength of Canada. Ichabod, whose name also appears at the bottom of the letter, possibly was her husband.
