Title: A Proclamation for a day of humiliation and prayer.

Reprinting of Lincoln's proclamation of 7 July 1864 calling for a day of prayer for the people of the United States in order to bring about the end of the Civil War and the continuation of the Union. Printed again by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the Governor John A. Andrew calling again for the first Thursday of August to be designated the day of prayer. Requests that this be published and sent out to communities. This copy was mailed to Rev. Edward P. Hale at Milton. Address and Andrew Jackson postage stamp on verso.

Title: Speeches of John A. Andrew at Hingham and Boston, together with his testimony before the Harper's Ferry Committee of the Senate, in relation to John Brown.

Campaign pamphlet for John A. Andrew while running as Republican for Governor of Massachusetts. Contains campaign speeches, the party platform, transcript of Andrew's testimony before the Senate regarding John Brown, and a defense of an attack on Brown. Andrew was called before Congress to explain how and why he helped find lawyers to represent John Brown at his trial in Virginia. Also explains that those who claim Andrew funded Brown's raid are mistaken, and clarifies his support of Brown.

Issued by Andrew as Governor of Massachusetts. Warns citizens against enticement into other state militias. Says "they can expect no aid from the authorities of Massachusetts in any embarrassments in which they may find themselves." Mentions some Massachusetts units that need replacements. Below the warning is a reprint of correspondence between Governor Andrew and the Baltimore headquarters of Major General John A. Dix, who was trying to deal with the problem of fraudulent enlistments. Image of the state seal of Massachusetts at the top of document.

Notes that a person whose name is illegible "made a fool of himself on the subject of the Personal LIberty Act. Others are doing the same thing.
